Dream It Be It Conference

Soroptimist International of Rio Vista hosted 30 Rio Vista High School ninth through twelfth grade girls, at its second Dream It, Be It Conference, March 9, 2019. The event was in the school’s theater.

The club has been unable to host the event in subsequent years due to the pandemic but plans an event in 2022.

Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls, a program of Soroptimist International, targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. It provides girls with access to professional role models, career opportunities and the resources to live their dreams.

Saturday’s conference included female members of the Solano College TRIO SSS-STEM (TRIO Student Support Services-Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) team. The team, which is made up of students working toward a degree in STEM fields, served as conference table facilitators and engaged the high school students in conversations about planning for post-secondary pursuits and goals.

Topics for the day included career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles to success and how to move forward after setbacks or failures. Guest presenter, Dr. Lettie Ramirez, professor from California State University East Bay, also gave a talk on the importance of having a personal budget while pursuing one’s goals.

At the conclusion of the daylong conference, five participants won a Chromebook as a door prize.
